Resolve Histamine Intolerance
Get Back to Eating the Foods that You Love
What is Histamine Intolerance?
Does it seem like every time you have a glass of wine and a cheese appetizer, you get a headache or even a migraine a few hours later? You might have histamine intolerance.
Both cheese and wine, especially red wine, are high in histamine, a chemical produced during the fermentation process of making wine and cheese.
You are probably more familiar with histamine as a chemical released by the body with allergic reactions like sneezing, watery eyes, and skin rashes. And that is why you reach for antihistamine medications like Zyrtec, Claritin, or maybe Benadryl.
Histamine levels can reach toxic levels from foods high in histamine, a biogenic amine, or from what your body produces due to poor degradation or breakdown of histamine and its cousin, tyramine. To learn more, check out my blog.
You Can Resolve Histamine Intolerance!
Histamine intolerance is probably the hardest food intolerance to overcome because they are so many different causes of becoming intolerant to foods high in histamine. But it can be done!
Gut Health
Histamine intolerance originates in the gut! Almost all foods contain some histamine and the gut is what protects us from becoming toxic with high levels of histamine. A healthy gut blocks histamine from our food assuring levels will not get too high.
Autoimmunity
Histmine plays a major role in our immune system helping to protect us. But when we have an autoimmune flare, we release histamine which triggers chronic inflammation. And this leads to an imbalanced immune system.
Genetics
Nutrigenomics was game changer for me when it came to resolving histamine intolerance. After spending years trying to figure out why I was histamine intolerant; my genomics gave me my DNA blueprint to resolving histamine intolerance.
What is the connection between autoimmunity and histamine intolerance?
When we have an autoimmune flare-up or when your Hashimoto's is not in remission, your immune system is out of balance. Our immune system naturally triggers inflammation as a defense against pathogens or invaders. With a normal immune response, inflammation will go down as part of the healing process. With autoimmune, our immune system stays in a very pro-inflammatory state and that means histamine is being released. And, our histamine bucket can overfill with a histamine-rich diet.
This is why histamine intolerances is the number one food intolerance with autoimmunity.
