Your Low-Histamine Kitchen Guide to Food Storage
Food Storage Options & Labeling Tools
Freezing extra portions soon after cooking is one of the simplest ways to make low-histamine eating more manageable.
The microbial activity is greatly slowed down with freezing, which can contribute to histamine formation during storage, helping meals remain more predictable than leftovers kept in the refrigerator for several days.
I recommend freezing food in individual portions using freezer-safe glass, ceramic, or reusable silicone containers.
These durable options can be reused and let you store, thaw, and—for products approved for reheating—warm food without heating it directly in plastic.
Always leave room for food to expand, avoid sudden temperature changes with glass or ceramic, and follow the manufacturer’s freezer and reheating instructions.
Convenient Options I Use or Consider
The following products are options that I have used for years to easily freeze food and manage my freezer inventory.
Snapware Glass Containers
These durable glass containers have lasted for years, and you can easily label the contents on the lid, which is dishwasher-safe. You can easily erase labels with rubbing alcohol or just use a paper towel.
Ceramic Freezer Storage
Ceramic storage can easily go from the freezer to the oven. Or you can bake directly in the containers; let them cool and freeze. Label with your reusable labels.
Stasher Premium Silicone Bags
I have used many different, less expensive silicone bags, but they were always difficult to close, even when I could get them to close. These bags are extremely durable and microwave-safe. A great option for soups and grain dishes. They also take up less space. Make sure to wash in the dishwasher, as they do tend to hold onto odors, which are easily removed with washing in the dishwasher.
Reusable Food Labels
I have used these for years and have used them for everything, not just for labeling freezer containers. They stick on even in the dishwasher, and they are easily erasable.
Souper Cubes
These silicone cubes are great for storing everything from soups to meals. To heat up your meal, simply pop out the food and put in the microwave or oven.
